Is engine size the right number to look at?
Displacement is what everybody asks about, and it is standing in for four other things. How much the machine weighs. Whether it drives all four wheels. Whether it has a low range. How much tire is actually touching dirt. Two machines with the same number stamped on the side can behave completely differently behind a drill depending on those four, which is why a 500cc quad with low range, decent tread, and 750 pounds under it will out-work a bigger machine on bald tires.
I will admit something about that. What you put in the boxes does add weight, and people forget this one. A large box loaded with oats or rye or a grain-heavy plot mix is carrying a great deal more than the same box full of big bluestem, because fluffy warm-season seed is mostly air. Running grain across a side hill, load it lighter and fill it more often.

Polaris publishes 1,350 pounds of towing capacity on the Sportsman 570, a 567cc single making 44 horsepower with a 1.25 inch receiver. The Ranger SP 570 is rated at 1,500 pounds on a 2 inch receiver. On paper you have room to spare with either one, and on flat ground you probably do.
The trouble is what the rating was measured against. A trailer on wheels, on decent ground, carrying its own load on its own axle while your machine handles nothing but rolling resistance. That is not the job. Polaris puts the qualifier in its own fine print on the Sportsman: payload and trailer weight affect the angle of hill the vehicle will hold. Use the number as a sanity check and leave it there.
What actually stops you on a hill?
Going up is rarely the problem. Coming down is where people get hurt, and the extension people have been saying so for years.
Penn State’s guidance on the safe use of ATVs in agriculture is blunt: heavy loads on slopes can jackknife an ATV, slide it, or roll it, and tow-behind attachments can exceed the machine’s braking capacity outright. Ohio State’s factsheet on safe UTV operation makes the same point about stopping distance growing with the weight of whatever is behind you.
So when a recommendation goes up for hilly ground, that is what it is about. A smaller engine will drag the drill up the hill just fine. Low range and engine braking earn their keep here. Go down in low, let the driveline hold you, and where the ground gives you a choice, plant up and down rather than across the face of it.
How to tell if your machine is enough
Run these five before you order anything.
- Does your machine’s manual set a towing or slope limit? Whatever it says overrides the rest of this list, and it overrides me.
- Does it have a low range? Without one you are relying on brakes alone every time you point downhill.
- Four-wheel drive, and tread left on the tires? Traction is what turns engine power into pull, and worn tires waste both.
- How much does the machine itself weigh? A heavier quad puts more of its power on the ground and holds a hill better. Machine weight does more for you here than displacement does.
- Can you stop it on your worst descent? Go try it, empty, on the actual hill, before there is seed in the box and discs in the ground.
Miss on the first or the last one and you should size up, or plant the flat parts and leave the rest. Miss on the middle three and you can usually still work, you will just be more careful about it than someone with the right machine.
And a bigger four-wheeler does not turn a bad slope into a good one. If you would not be comfortable on that hill with nothing behind you, do not go up it with a drill. If the ground is wet enough that you are cutting ruts, you are not planting, you are making yourself work in the fall.
Do you need hydraulics, and will your hitch fit?
No on the first. Check on the second.
Most no-till drills are three-point implements: the tractor lifts them and the tractor’s hydraulics work the discs. Own a UTV and you have neither of those, which is why so many forum threads about small drills end with somebody being told they need a tractor after all.

All four land within an inch or two of the same width. What changes down that middle column is what has to already be sitting in your shed before the machine is even an option. If you run a 570 quad and no tractor, three of those rows are not a comparison you get to weigh, they are a door that is closed. That is not a knock on those drills.
